Friday Cook Off – Pap and Boerwors

Friday Cook Off – Pap and Boerwors

Our Melita Family has such a diverse range of cultures we thought that a great team building exercise would be a Friday cook off. First to cook were Kgopolo (Hoops) and Gugu who are both from Johannesburg, South Africa and have been with the Melita Family for 18 months. The beauty of New Zealand stole their hearts and brought them here to live and work. They love the simplicity and natural life in New Zealand.

On the menu was a traditional South African Meal called Pap and Boerwors with Chakalaku.

Pap – is a traditional porridge/polenta made from mielie-meal (ground maize) and it is a staple food, many traditional South African dishes include Pap.

Boerwors – is a popular type of sausage in South African cuisine. The name is derived from the Afrikaans word boer ‘farmer’ and wors ‘sausage’. It always contains Beef and pork or lamb or a mixture of pork and lamb.

Chakalaku – is a South African vegetable relish, usually spicy and is traditionally served with Pap.

Well they did an amazing job and it was a super fulling lunch! The Pap was a fine rice texture mixed with the Chakalaku, a delicious mild spicy tomato relish and the Boerwors sausage on the side was beautiful and the whole dish was full of flavour. We loved it thanks guys!

Cannot wait to see whats next on the Melita Friday lunch menu…
